On Friday, May 13^th, 14-year-old Diana Halloran disappears. She takes a short cut home from school through a wooded ravine, and is never seen again. Months later, her shoes are found in Gary Malone's basement. The police search and find more of her clothing. And that's when Malone's nightmare begins. Malone is a popular young real estate agent, but overnight he turns into a murdering sex fiend. His best friends, Luke and Betty Summer, turn against him. Police Chief Kraft is convinced of his guilt, though he doesn't have enough proof to arrest him. The D. A. is howling for his blood. Even his own wife Ellen shuns him. He is tried by everyone in town and found guilty. The only one who knows that Malone is innocent--is Malone himself!

When she meets Morgan O'Keefe, he's a writer on a ten-day drunk, verging on the dt's. Irene Wilson takes him in, as she does so many alcoholics, mostly to assuage her own guilt at having accidentally shot and killed her husband, Jay, ten years ago. As Morgan begins to recover, he is introduced to her family: her brother-in-law, Frank, and his wife Glenna. They join Irene for cocktail parties all the while condemning her for Jay's death. Glenna is convinced that Jay's death was no accident. The more Morgan finds out about the events of ten years ago, the more he begins to agree--Jay's death was no accident, but who is the real guilty party in this household of death?
