The fountain of youth has a broker named Parnell. Plastic surgeons are cheap imitators of what only he can offer in its purest form: age adjusting. Transacting years of life for a nominal fee. Parnell is a middleman, buying youth to sell at a premium. The margins make him functionally immortal, and so he's plied this trade for centuries, a fair share of hurdles along the way, but always a steady business.

Opportunity presents itself in the form of Abigail Portsmith. A chance to right a long-bothersome wrong. For Parnell to present himself and age adjusting to the world, discarding the veil of secrecy, becoming a bona fide public enterprise. His plan succeeds in the worst way, and while Abigail's life is saved, Parnell's becomes undone.
